费城交响乐团于1900年成立，是著名的美国五大交响乐团之一，以其百年历史、精湛水准和饱满灿烂的 “费城之声”而享誉世界乐坛。历任音乐总监为弗里茨谢尔(Fritz Scheel，任期1900-1907)、卡尔波利希(Carl Pohlig，1907-1912)、莱奥波德斯托科夫斯基(Leopold Stokowski，1912-1941)、尤金奥曼迪(Eugene Ormandy，1936-1980)、里卡多穆蒂(Riccardo Muti(听歌)，1980-1992)、沃尔夫冈萨瓦利什(Wolfgang Sawallisch，1993-2003)和克里斯托夫艾森巴赫(Christoph Eschenbach，自2003年至今)。1900年创建于费城同年11月16日举行第一次音乐会。最早担任指挥的是弗谢尔(Fritz Scheel,1882～1907)。建团80余年中对乐团的成长影响最大的指挥家为史托科夫斯基和奥曼蒂史托科夫斯基于1913年就任第三任音乐指导与指挥,短期内使乐团的演奏水平显着提高，乐团以辉煌的音响、多彩的音色闻名于世，被称为费城音响。它的各个乐器组都拥有着名演奏家。其管乐部分格外出色。在史托科夫斯基时期，乐团通过首次演出和唱片、广播等介绍了许多现代音乐作品。1936年后奥曼蒂与乐团共事41年，曾带领乐团在欧亚各洲旅行演出。1977～1980年由原来的第一客席指挥里卡多慕狄担任音乐指导与指挥。乐团总员约110人。现任指挥是萨瓦利什。
