No doubt the most highly acclaimed cinema composer of the 20th century, Ennio Morricone developed his aesthetic as the quintessential film score composer during the '60s in the Italian thriller and horror films of the late '60s and early '70s. While the films themselves may have aged into kitsch, in no sense has the maestro's music declined with age. On this 1971 score for Sergio Sollima's pastiche thriller, Ennio Morricone provided the tense yet subtle backdrop of his signature eclectic fusion. His music may have been intended to provide cinematic tension at the time, though in retrospect Diavolo Nel Cervello is a composition of profoundly inventive music that is simple and pure Ennio Morricone of the early '70s — one of his most productive, if obscured periods. The reissue on Dagored welcomes the bonus of extra, unreleased tracks and high-fidelity remastering. An excellent addition to any soundtrack collection.
