It was written and produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone who had previously collaborated on the number one single "Vogue" (1990) and would collaborate again on the studio album Erotica (1992). It was the second single to be released from her 1990 greatest hits compilation The Immaculate Collection on February 26, 1991 by Sire Records. It was the album's third single in the United Kingdom in April 1991. The single placed within the top-five in countries such as the UK, Ireland, Italy, and South Africa. According to The Official Charts Company, "Rescue Me" has sold 134,767 copies in the United Kingdom as of August 2008. In the United States, it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles survey at number 15 the week of March 2, 1991 and eventually placed at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA on May 24, 1991. No music video was filmed for the single, instead a compilation of footage from the 1987 Who's That Girl World Tour was used from the 1988 home video release Ciao, Italia! – Live from Italy.
