Cannonball Adderley's death on August 8, 1975 was a major surprise to the jazz world because, although he had long been overweight, he was only 46 when he died from a stroke. This particular LP was already more than half completed with Adderley taking his last solos on three of the selections. The group he had utilized was quite unusual with Cannonball and cornetist Nat Adderley joined by Alvin Batiste (on electric clarinet, flute and tenor), keyboardist George Duke, bassist Alphonso Johnson, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Airto. Batiste and Nat have individual features but unfortunately none of the music is all that memorable; Hermeto Pascoal's "Nascente" comes the closest. After Cannonball's death "Lovers" (which had been planned for the album) was recorded as a memorial with Flora Purim on the vocal, Nat Adderley, Batiste, Duke and Nat Adderley Jr. on keyboards, bassists Johnson and Ron Carter, DeJohnette and Airto. The intentions were honorable but the music is pretty forgettable.
