by Stewart MasonJohn Wesley Harding's third Frank Capra-inspired album title in a row (this time coming from the director's autobiography), 1991's The Name Above the Title, is a poor follow-up to 1989's flawed but ultimately worthwhile Here Comes the Groom. The tendency toward overblown, overlong songs continues unabated -- two of the 15 songs break the six-minute barrier, with two more over five, and none of them could have been summarily dispatched in four or under -- but more worryingly, the songwriting is simply nowhere near as good. There's not a single tune as catchy and immediate as "Here Comes the Groom" or "Cathy's New Clown," although the horn-enhanced single "The World (And All Its Problems)" comes close, and particularly in the latter half of the CD, there's quite a bit of plain, undisguised filler, with a lame cover of "Crystal Blue Persuasion" the most egregious example. Simply put, The Name Above the Title is an enormous letdown.
