Johnny B. Goode (feat. Michael McDonald, Johnnie Johnson & David Sanborn)
This is the story of how the only studio recording of Johnny B. Goode with Johnnie Johnson on piano becomes Rock n Roll History. It all came about when Michael Mesey ( Drummer for Headeast/Chuck Berry ) was in the studio recording his Boogie/Rockin/Country version of Johnny B. Goode. After playing many shows with Chuck Berry and Johnnie Johnson he asked Johnnie if he would play piano on this recording with him, and that was the beginning of what would become the Magical Foundation for this version of Johnny B. Goode. Many years later after Johnnies Passing, Mesey would continue to search for the artists with that musical connection for this special recording. One day hearing a Lap Steel part on a song by Steve Scorfina ( Pavlovs Dog/REO Speedwagon ), Mesey approached Steve and discussed with Steve how he thought that Lap Steel sound would be perfect for this recording he had of him and Johnnie. Steve was thrilled about the idea and Recorded his Killer Lap Steel track to the recording. Steve had also suggested asking his long time friend Michael McDonald if he would be interested in recording the vocal track, This conversation came about during the 50th Anniversary in Ferguson of Steve and Michael's first band ( The Majestic's ). After the conversations between Steve, Dan Duncan and Michael McDonald, Michael was very excited about the recording and recorded an amazing vocal track. While discussions were ongoing on how to proceed with the recording, Mesey and Steve had been talking about a film that had been in the making about Johnnie Johnson called Johnnie Be Good by Art Holliday. Dan Duncan also knowing Art, is contacted and gets a meeting together for Michael Mesey, Steve Scorfina, Dan Duncan and Art Holliday. At this time the Recording project and the Movie decide to work together for Mesey to Produce and complete the song to help raise money for the Movie's Release. Art then proceeds to send emails to Artists that are in the movie already to see if there is any interest in performing on the recording. This now brings Jimmy Vivino ( Guitarist and Band leader for Conan Obrien ) on Guitar, Dona Oxford ( Johnnie Johnson's Protégé ) on Backing Vocals, David Sanborn on Alto Sax, and also to finalize the recording we have Greg Hulub on Bass, Leslie Craig on Backing Vocals and Dan Duncan on congas. This has been a year long Recording Adventure for all of us, and we hope it brings you a Special and Exciting Version of one of the most iconic songs ever. Turn it up and Enjoy Johnny B. Goode.
