Sunday Night
According to one enthusiastic listener, “If you are looking for a female folk artist who creates music that conjures up a sense of truth, purity and elucidation of things we encounter in our lives that are confusing, strange and beautiful, Divya Kumar is a must-hear!” Intimate, warm, and candid, Divya's sublime vocals and insightful lyrics bring a fresh approach to the folk genre. With an understated simplicity, she brings listeners into the complexities and beauty of the moments illustrated by her lyrics. Her songs are personal and relatable, fresh and honest. A Connecticut native, Divya came to Boston in 1999. She became a frequent performer at well-loved venues such as the Kendall Café, Club Passim, and the Burren, and she opened for regional favorites including Kris Delmhorst, as well as nationally known artists such as Catie Curtis. In 2000, with the help of Dan Koulomzin, Anand Nayak, and Nate Van Til, Divya released the CD Sunday Night. The album’s title track made her a finalist for the Independent Music Awards that year. After taking a hiatus from music to attend graduate school and start a family, Divya returned to performing in 2014, both as a solo artist and as The Cicada Sessions, a collaboration with Melissa Morris and Allyson Casey.
