This soundtrack cemented the popularity of A. R. Rahman. After Roja introduced the composer with a bang, Kadhalan's sales and acclaim led to further success for Rahman. New styles were experiemented like rap on songs like "Pettai rap". The synthesizer and the keyboard feature whilst drawing from Tamil folk music. Songs like "Urvasi Urvasi" and "Mukkala Mukkabla" became huge hits and were played everywhere in Tamil Nadu. Even in the north these songs gained popularity because of the dubbing of the movie into Hindi.
