The song had been originally written for singer Mandy Smith, but her recording was never released until 2005. The song received a mixed reception from music critics. The song was released as the third single in the spring of 1988 and became the first single to debut at number one in Australia. It also topped the charts in Belgium and Finland. It reached the top ten in France, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
