New Generation
"The members of B2E [Back to Earth] function under a collaborative creative process… the songs you hear are made together, with the whole band," -Stanley Luna, El Diario de Hoy, quoting Pablo Berganza, violinist and pianist of Back to Earth. "Their ability to work well alongside anyone really sets them apart," -Lois Takemura, band manager and former teacher of the boys. "In El Salvador, we are used to Latin music and beats, then suddenly here they are, with this refreshing new sound," -Chato Hernandez, lead guitarist and songwriter for the Salvadoran band Friguey, and producer of the boys' first EP, "Going Nowhere," scheduled for release at the end of 2015. "What's the first thing you think of when El Salvador is mentioned?" challenges Javier Michiels, songwriter, on Back to Earth's Facebook page, acutely aware of El Salvador's new status as the most violent nation in the world. "Many immediately think of the violence, corruption and poverty that surround us. But as for me, when I think of my country, I see passion, I see talent, I see art painted from her very roots, I see a country with the most beautiful nature on this planet, with a new generation rising up to make this nation vibrate with a great wave of love, peace, unity and respect. A generation that brings a revolution of art and music to this world, even from the smallest and most underestimated country; ready to break the mold and raise our awareness. Lower the bombs and pistols, this war we will fight with maracas and guitars!" Several songs in the upcoming album (written by the four founding members: Diego Carballo, Rodrigo Carballo, Javier Michiels and Javier Castillo), revolve around this same theme of being caught between a harsh reality and a persistent clinging to hope, echoing the Salvadoran heart, that often faces loss and disappointment but smiles and charges forward with a heart of gold. The band has had its share of challenges since first forming in 2013; they have formed and re-formed several times, having had the privilege of working with a variety of passionate musicians. Two of the principal recording artists for their EP, Christian Edouard (drums) and Nicky Linares (bass) have since left El Salvador for the United States; Javier Michiels and Javier Castillo are presently residing in Canada. But the band never gives up, and the Carballo brothers continue to compose and find new friends to work alongside, and each one they play with, whether in a jam session or a concert, contributes some of their heart and soul into this project. Since recording "Going Nowhere" at the end of 2014, the band has incorporated guitarist and songwriter, Hector Rico, and together with the other members, they are eager to finally release their first album, as they continue composing messages of hope to share with their friends, families and brothers, far and near.
