Gerry Mulligan Presents A Concert In Jazz
by Ken Dryden Gerry Mulligan's third LP to feature his Concert Jazz Band is one of his best efforts, because the concert repertoire recorded during this pair of 1961 studio sessions was written specifically for his group. For openers, George Russell rearranged his exciting three-part suite "All About Rosie," with Mulligan, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and trumpeter Don Ferrara contributing hot solos. Gary McFarland wrote and arranged "Weep," an upbeat swinger that's hardly melancholy. He also contributed the jaunty, loping "Chuggin'," showcasing Willie Dennis' sassy trombone and Nick Travis' delicious muted trumpet. Brookmeyer expanded Mulligan's sextet piece "I Know, Don't Know How" and scored the leader's bittersweet ballad "Summer's Over." John Carisi wrote a terrific new chart to update "Israel," a composition Mulligan first recorded for Miles Davis' historic Birth of the Cool album. Long out of print and of high interest to fans of Gerry Mulligan, this album is scheduled to be reissued as a part of a Mosaic box set that will compile all of the Concert Jazz Band recordings for Verve.
