Breakin' the Ice: The Early Years, Part 1
Fats Waller原名Thomas Waller，1904年5月21日出生于纽约市。他的父亲是一位牧师。自上世纪20年代起他就和他母亲一起在教堂里演奏风琴。1918年曾以一曲James P. Johnson作曲的《Carolina Shout》赢得过一次赛会。此曲是他观察一台自动钢琴演奏时学会的。后来他就从师了这位Johnson学习钢琴。 1922年他开始为一些Party演奏，录制唱片，还在电影院里演奏风琴，为一些小型歌舞剧伴奏。1927年他和他那位钢琴老师Johnson共同为他的‘Keep Shufflin’’节目作了好几支曲。两年后，他独自为百老汇音乐剧‘Hot Chocolates’谱了乐曲，由他的朋友Andy Razaf为这些乐曲填了词。在此剧中，Louis Armstrong演唱的那支《Ain’t Misbehavin’》取得了极大的成功。 Fats Waller在1934年为George Gershwin举行的一次宴会上，以其充满灵感的歌声，突出的钢琴演奏方式，爵士乐曲的编排形式，几乎是一举成名的，成为全国最受欢迎的艺人之一。在宴会上，胜利唱片公司的一位成员对他很感兴趣，并安排Fats Waller到这家公司去录制唱片。直到Fats Waller1943年12月15日逝世前，他一直都在为这家公司服务。 Fats Waller在这家公司录的唱片，绝大部分都使用了‘Fats Waller and his Rhythm’的名字。这个小组经常保持着5-6名成员，Zutty Singleton是其中之一。在1929到1939年间，他有60支上榜曲，还在电影‘Stormy Weather’中显现过。在30年代到40年代初，他是无线电台和夜总会上的一颗亮星，期间还赴欧洲演出过。1943年，由于得了伤寒，逝于密西西比州堪萨斯市附近的一列火车上。 Fats Waller在大乐队时期，曾有一曲《Little Curly Hair In A High Chair》，于1940年5月25日登上过排行榜的第6位。为了纪念他，70年代末演出了一出百老汇音乐剧‘Ain’t Misbehavin’’。1993年他被授予了葛莱梅终身成就奖。
